Alright now Ladies and Gentlemen,the story now concludes and the curtains shall draw back together once again as the final scene is played away and We exit the dark realm of madness created more than 4 decades ago by a little known cast and crew of what would become a rarety in cinema,a film only costing 33,000 dollars and shelved up with other dust collectors,only to become a respected cult classic many years later and is now considered to be one of the most chilling films of it’s kind.
Funny how nobody has ever been able to capture the legendary exploits of Starkweather and His psycho Girlfriend quite like a group of misfit smalltime filmmakers who would never again create such classic images that would rival these.
It makes Me think of how these days it seems that most fimmakers think if they can get a bigger budget that it will help them make a better film with lots of CGI effects and well known actors and soo isn’t it refreshing to journey back to a time when a film could capture soo much more from the simple and raw talent of hungry actors,mixed with a true creativity of filmmakers who understood that it wasn’t about the money but rather it was about the craftsmanship and good storytelling techniques.
These classic Masters of imagination earned their rights as true filmmakers through the toils of discovery and finding ways to make it work,even when it seemed impossible but sadly this is a notion that seems to have been lost to the modern generation of filmmakers.
Ahh and now before I close this fun lil gig I will include another segment of that wonderful lil interview in which Arch talks about that harrowing scene in the snake pit ewwww rattlers yikes!!!!!
JUMPING INTO A PIT OF BUZZING RATTLESNAKES IS NOT MY IDEA OF A LOT OF FUN. TRUE, I TRUSTED THE SNAKE HANDLER WOULD NOT LET ME GET BIT, BUT WHEN SNAKES ARE STRIKING AT YOUR LEGS AND AT YOUR FACE IT IS PRETTY EASY TO “ACT” SCARED. MOVIE SETS ARE CONTROLLED CHAOS AND MISTAKES ARE SOMETIMES MADE CAUSING ACCIDENTS SUCH AS THE DEATH OF BRUCE LEE’S SON, BRANDON.
MY PROBLEMS AROSE THAT DAY WHEN THE SNAKE HANDLER WAS LATE REPORTING FOR WORK DURING THE SHOOT OF “CHARLIE’S SNAKE PIT” SEQUENCE. IT WAS A COLD WINTER MORNING IN THE NEWHALL-SAUGUS AREA NORTH OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AND DIRECTOR LANDIS AND VILMOS ZSIGMOND WERE GETTING NERVOUS ABOUT WASTING TIME AND LOSING LIGHT WAITING FOR THE SNAKE HANDLER TO ARRIVE. LANDIS HAD WALKED OVER TO LOOK AT THE SNAKES ON THE TRUCK. NOTE: THE HANDLER HAD LEFT HIS TRUCK FILLED WITH BOXES OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF SNAKES ON LOCATION OVERNIGHT. LANDIS SUDDENLY GOT THE BRIGHT IDEA TO GET SOME SNAKES OURSELVES AND TOSS THEM INTO THE PIT AND GET SOMETHING ACCOMPLISHED BEFORE THE SNAKE HANDLER ARRIVED. HE ASKED ME IF I OBJECTED TO GETTING STARTED? I REMEMBER SAYING NO, I GUESS NOT. SO HE AND VILMOS GRABBED SEVERAL BOXES OF SNAKES AND DUMPED THEM INTO THE PIT. THROWING THE RED COLORED MILK CRATE SIZED BOXES ASIDE, THERE WAS MANY MORE SNAKES IN THE PIT THAN THE PREVIOUS DAY. LANDIS LAUGHED AS HE CHAINED SMOKED AS HE LIKED THE INCREASED AMOUNT OF SNAKES. I THOUGHT I WAS SAFE AS THE HANDLER HAD SAID THE RATTLERS MOUTHS WERE TEMPORARILY STITCHED SHUT TO PREVENT A DEADLY SNAKE BITE.
I CLIMBED DOWN INTO THE PIT AS VILMOS WAS STIRRING THE SNAKES UP WITH A LONG STICK TO MAKE THEM ANGRY. THE SNAKES WERE PRETTY LETHARGIC BECAUSE OF THE COLD OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURE AND AS IT TURNS OUT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN WHAT SAVED MY LIFE! VILMOS WAS GETTING SOME LIGHTS SET UP TRYING TO WARM UP THE SNAKES WHEN UP DROVE THE SNAKE HANDLER WHO HAD HAD A FLAT TIRE AT HIS MOTEL. THE HANDLER WENT BERSERK SCREAMING TO GET THAT KID THE F**K OUT OF THE PIT NOW! HE HAD NOTICED RIGHT AWAY THAT THE COLOR OF THE BOXES THAT THE SNAKES WERE IN WERE CODED FOR “HOT” RATTLERS NOT “COLD” RATTLERS WITH THE MOUTHS SEWN SHUT. SO IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE LOW OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES… I MAY HAVE IN REAL LIFE ENDED UP LIKE MY CHARACTER CHARLIE TIBBS…DEAD FROM DIAMONDBACK & TIMBER RATTER VENOM.
